Dr Karen Bailey

BVSc. (Distinction), PhD, MACVSc.

Karen graduated from Massey University with distinction in 1983 and worked as a veterinarian in the meat industry before returning to Massey to complete a doctorate in veterinary clinical science. Her PhD studies on ovine brucellosis focussed on pathological and immunological aspects of the disease. She then entered a small animal practice in central Auckland until moving to the United Kingdom.  On her return to New Zealand, Karen joined the staff at MAF’s Lincoln Animal Health Laboratory. While at Lincoln, Karen became a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, was a Kellogg Rural Leadership Scholar and held positions as Veterinary Manager, Laboratory Manager and Exotic Disease Response Manager.  

She is a past president of the Canterbury Branch, New Zealand Veterinary Association and for many years chaired the advisory subcommittee for Veterinary Nursing at the CPIT (now the Ara Institute of Christchurch). Karen has several published papers and has presented at a variety of courses and seminars.  In 1999, Karen joined the staff of LabWorks Animal Health, now Awanui Veterinary Christchurch.

With over 25 years’ experience, Karen enjoys all aspects of diagnostic and clinical pathology, and has particular interests in companion animal cytology and endocrinology, and in microbiology and parasitology.
