Dr Janice Thompson
BVSc (Distinction), PhD
Janice graduated with a BVSc with Distinction from Massey University in 1975. She then spent 3 years in a general mixed animal practice in Tauranga before heading back to Massey to start a PhD in the field of clinical pathology. She graduated with a PhD entitled “Leptospirosis: Pathogenesis and red cell destruction” in 1983. She described the ultrastructural changes that occur in the RBCs of calves and hamsters following infection with serovars of Leptospira interogans that cause haemolysis and RBC destruction.
Whilst having a young family Janice worked part time both as a research officer in the clinical science department at Massey University and also as a locum in various small animal practices. Research topics included ultrastructural work on tissues from cats suffering from inherited lipoprotein lipase deficiency and Burmese cats with a congenital muscle defect. Janice was then appointed as clinical pathologist at the MAF Batchelor Animal Health Laboratory in Palmerston North in 1990. This later became Gribbles Veterinary Pathology.
Janice is interested in all aspects of clinical pathology covering haematology, clinical biochemistry, cytopathology, and endocrinology in all species of animals. She has written a large number of papers for referred journals covering many aspects of clinical pathology. Personal interests are small block farming and horse riding.
